Designated Survivor: The conspiracy falls apart

In the season finale of Designated Survivor, the plan to take down the government fell apart. The episode started with Hannah taking off with a bomb in the back of the van and driving it into the Tidal Basin. Lozano and company had wanted to blow up the FBI and blame Hannah for it.

The president and the FBI then decide it’s time to bring in Patrick Lloyd. Only Lloyd was once again ahead of them and escaped through an underground tunnel, but at least they took down all of the cells across the country.

Meanwhile, Whitaker created a fake identity for Lozano so that he could get into the Pentagon. I admit I was annoyed because Lozano’s face should have been plastered everywhere and quite recognizable even with the fake ID, but yet he was still able to get into the Pentagon.

Hannah gets to the Pentagon in time to see Lozano leaving and goes after him. Lozano crashes and jumps out of the car. He ends up running into a house that is under construction. Hannah and Lozano fight and Lozano ends up dead.

Because Whitaker created the ID for Lozano in the White House, Chuck is able to track him and, yes, they finally figured out that Whitaker is the mole.

President Kirkman gives an uplifting speech, but then returns to the White House in time to be told that he’s needed in the Situation Room. That’s where he gets the bad news. The FBI finally figured out why Lozano was at the Pentagon. He stole all of our intelligence information and gave it to Patrick Lloyd.

Do they know where Patrick Lloyd is? Of course, they don’t. The finale ended with Lloyd getting out of a car somewhere with a briefcase. He’s obviously going to try to sell all of the information.

It was a good finale because it set up the next season, but it also was frustrating.

La Doble Vida de Estela Carrillo looks like a hit

I’ve been looking forward to La Doble Vida de Estela Carrillo because the cast is fabulous–David Zepeda, Danilo Carrera, Ariadne Díaz, and Mike Biaggio. It has only been on for a week and I’m hooked.

Laura is in the United States illegally after escaping from some bad guys and she buys the identification of Estela Carrillo so she can work. She becomes a music teacher at a school and there is a shooting. Laura ends up on TV as a hero for saving the children from the shooter.

Ryan is in prison, awaiting trial for the murder of Pedro Carrillo, Estela’s father. His lawyers tell him that Estela was on TV. Supposedly, even though she and Ryan were dating, no one met her so they don’t know what she really looks like. Ryan, of course, wants to meet her because he thought Estela was dead, but if she’s alive, she can testify for him and get him out of prison.

Laura agrees to visit Ryan and he figures out she is not Estela. Later, Laura agrees to play the part of Estela and testify for Ryan, after he told her that he’d have her and her daughter deported if she didn’t.

She testifies and the judge determines that the prosecution has no case. Apparently, the prosecution didn’t have any evidence, which makes me wonder how Ryan was arrested in the first place, but I digress. Ryan is released from prison.

Laura thinks that’s the end of it, but unfortunately she now has Pedro Carrillo’s enemies after her. She also is fired from her job and her house is ransacked.

Much to the dismay of his mother, Ryan takes her in along with her daughter, Paloma, and her friend, Chayo. I haven’t figured out if Paloma is really Laura’s daughter. I guess that will come later.

There’s also a mysterious guy who currently can’t see in Peru. He thought Laura was dead and recently discovered she’s not. Now, Laura will have to deal with him as well.

Ryan’s brother, Danilo, is trying to break into music with his band. He’s so desperate to succeed that he’s gotten involved with some thugs. Overall, he’s a mess. He decided to drive the tour bus while drunk and crashed. At least, I assume he crashed. I’m curious to see what happened to him tonight.

Vino el Amor: Somehow David and Luciana found love

The finale of Vino el Amor was meant to be two hours, but Univision, once again, decided to show the first hour on Friday, making Monday’s episode dull.

I’ll start with the exciting stuff first. Juan confronted Graciela on the day of the wedding about Perla’s death. Lilian found Juan in Graciela’s room and wanted to know what was going on. Juan told Lilian that Graciela killed Lisa and Perla. Lilian finally realized that she raised a monster after Graciela admitted to killing Lisa because she hated Lilian for always favoring Lisa and, of course, David should have been hers.

Fernanda heard the confession and didn’t take it well. She couldn’t believe what a fool she’d been. Well, neither could the rest of us. Fernanda took off to tell Bobby, and Graciela and Lilian continued to argue. They ended up on the stairs and Lilian pushed Graciela down the stairs and killed her. Graciela was such an awful human being that Lilian could have lied and said Graciela tripped over the dress and fell. No one probably would have questioned it. But Lilian decided to tell the truth. She told David that she couldn’t allow Graciela to marry him so she killed her. David is visibly disgusted by Lilian and Graciela.

While Graciela and Lilian were fighting, David and Juan were fighting and Juan told David everything. He also shot David in the arm before he was arrested.

In hour two, everyone was crying. David was on the floor holding a picture of Lisa and crying about how he blew it with Luciana. He noticed the door knob moving and Luciana walked in. After everything that had happened, David had the nerve to make his plea right then. He told Luciana that he never stopped loving her. Thankfully, Luciana didn’t jump into his arms. She told him everyone needed time to recover from what they had gone through.

Juan and Lilian ended up in prison. Juan was charged with Gutiérrez’s murder and the other inmates made sure he paid for what he did to the immigrants. Lilian had no defense because she admitted to killing Graciela.

There was a montage that showed everyone moving on with their lives, which included Fernanda going to college, Sonia’s book signing, and the opening of a new restaurant. Then, Sonia and León got married. While at the wedding, David made his move again. Luciana didn’t act on it. However, I felt like I was watching an episode of The Bachelorette when she sat on the porch later and reminisced about Miguel and David.

Later, David and Luciana were inexplicably together. They ate breakfast with his children and Marta sat where Lilian used to. They then walked the vineyard and drank their new wine.

I’m glad Luciana and David finally got together because that’s what I was expecting. I wish, however, that the writers didn’t go as far as having David decide to marry Graciela for the sake of his children. They also didn’t do a good job of redeeming him after committing to that storyline. If Juan hadn’t shown up on the wedding day, David would have gone through with the wedding, even though he didn’t love Graciela. I don’t understand how Luciana forgave him and never stopped loving him. Only in a novela, I guess.

I’m also upset that Miguel didn’t end up with anyone. Maybe eventually he’ll fall for Carito. It would have been nice to see some sort of happy ending for Miguel.

Arrow: Felicity is dumped by Helix

Arrow decided to pause the action to focus more on the characters and their relationships.

Felicity worked with Helix to free Cayden James, the Helix founder, from an A.R.G.U.S. black site. The discovery of the black site caused issues for Lyla and John who was afraid Lyla has gone down the Amanda Waller road.

Oliver tried to talk Felicity out of going on the retrieval mission, but Felicity didn’t listen to him. She told Oliver that she fell in love with him because he was always willing to do whatever it took to get justice.

Apparently, Cayden has developed a biometric tool that will allow them to track Adrian Chase. Felicity is willing to do anything to get her hands on that tool so she can  avenge Billy’s death.

She helped Helix free Cayden, but when she returned to Helix’s headquarters, she was surprised that it was cleaned out. Alena, by video, explained that Felicity’s association with the Green Arrow was a liability so Helix decided to shut her out. As payment for her help, they left her the code to find Chase.

Felicity runs the code back at Team Arrow’s lair. The program tracks Chase to their location. Felicity no sooner announces that Chase is inside the lair when an EMP goes off.

I thought the drama was nice. The tension between Lyla and John and Felicity and Oliver kept the episode moving along. But I feel the writers took the easy way out with Helix. I thought Oliver should be the one to pull Felicity back from the edge. Instead of using their relationship, the writers chose to have Helix abandon Felicity, taking the choice for her to leave out of her hands.

The writers could have used Oliver and Felicity’s shared past and Oliver’s experiences to have Felicity choose to leave Helix and to bring Oliver and Felicity back together. It would have made the Helix storyline stronger. Right now, I’m left wondering what the point of the Helix storyline was. It feels like it was filler.

I’m also left disturbed because the writers showed a Felicity who was so far gone that even though Alena killed someone, Felicity still wanted to be part of the group. Felicity used to be the voice of reason. I can’t help but think the writers went completely over the top. It seemed out of character for Felicity. Yes, she was a hacker in the past, but she’s never condoned murder. She was the one who showed Oliver that there was a better way. If Felicity was going to become this dark, Oliver would be the perfect person to pull her out of it.

From what I saw in the preview, it appears the writers are going to rely on a common trope to bring Oliver and Felicity together. They are trapping them together in the lair with Psycho Chase. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with this trope. Writers use it all the time. I just think the writers missed out on an opportunity for a stronger Olicity relationship.

Vino el Amor: David falls for a monster

grapes-1611089_640I’ve been watching Vino el Amor for months and never thought I’d see the day that David would choose to be with a monster like Graciela. With only about three weeks to go, I’m baffled by what the writers could be thinking. How are David and Luciana going to end up together? We haven’t seen much of David and Luciana together as it is. Are we going to be left with them inexplicably together in the last episode?

I wish David had listened to Juan. He tried to warn David about Graciela and I thought Juan’s warning would be enough to break them up. Unfortunately, David isn’t bright and, even though Graciela squirmed after the confrontation with Juan, David decided to believe Graciela’s story that she had no idea what Juan was talking about. Yes, Juan is evil and I realize he was only trying to crush David by ruining David’s relationship with Graciela, but Juan actually was doing David a favor.

I’m also still disgusted by Fernanda. She’s so easily manipulated. Now, she’s going to ask David if he’s thought about marrying Graciela after Lilian put it in Fernanda’s head. If that’s not bad enough, the previews made me vomit in my mouth as David admitted that he had thought about marrying the witch. I don’t know how David can be redeemed and I’ve already lost all respect for him. It didn’t take long for Graciela to turn his head once he broke up with Luciana for the sake of his children. If he marries Graciela, I don’t see how he and Luciana can realistically end up together with the time left.

The alternative ending, which I’ve been trying not to give too much thought to, is David ends up with no one once he finds out that Graciela killed Lisa and Luciana falls for Miguel. He’s newly single now that Erika died as a result of the chemicals used to kill the plague started by the contaminated roses Juan planted close to the vineyard. It’s possible that Luciana and Miguel could find love, but that would make me completely unhappy after being sold on a David and Luciana love story.

Designated Survivor: Hannah and Chuck almost die and the president resets the clock

Since taking a bullet, President Kirkman has been busy uncovering who blew up the US Capitol. He appointed Hannah Wells to conduct the investigation.

Hannah discovered that the mysterious woman working with the people behind the bombing and the murder of Jason Atwood’s son was Brooke Mathison. Unfortunately, Brooke figured out that Hannah was working with Chuck and she tried to kill both of them.

Jason followed Hannah to Brooke’s house. Brooke and Hannah fought, and Jason killed Brooke after she pulled a gun. Hannah then found out that the Capitol wasn’t the last attack planned. Whoever Brooke was working for plans to blow up the Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, and the Statue of Liberty.

Meanwhile, President Kirkman reset the clock on his first 100 days in office and set forth an ambitious plan that includes job creation and gun control. His former chief of staff, Aaron Shore, got a new job with Kimble Hookstraten.

The latest episode of Designated Survivor left me with many questions. Will Hannah find the people responsible for the Capitol bombing before another attack happens? Why are all of these attacks planned? Will President Kirkman pick a new vice president? Will Aaron return to the White House?

Arrow: Will Oliver save Felicity from herself?

This season of Arrow has definitely been one of the better ones and part of that might be because we’re starting to see different sides of Oliver and Felicity.

I knew Oliver had a dark side. When he first became the Arrow, he killed the bad guys. I thought he did it to rid the world of the dregs of society. But the episode in which Prometheus kidnapped Oliver and tortured him showed that Oliver killed because he liked it. He killed even when it wasn’t necessary.

When Felicity joined Team Arrow, she was the light to Oliver’s darkness. She showed him there was a better way and made him a better man. Diggle seems to have picked up that torch. In the last episode, he brought Oliver back from the edge and showed Oliver that what he and the team do is important.

Diggle also has been worried about Felicity and with good reason. Since Billy’s death, Felicity has sought out her own darkness. She’s back to hacking and is working with a large group of hackers. She has shown that she is willing to do anything it takes to bring down Prometheus.

The direction of the storyline makes me wonder if now Oliver will take the torch from Diggle and become the light to Felcity’s darkness. Will the roles reverse and will Oliver save Felicity from herself and, if he does, will we have another chance at Olicity? I would prefer Olicity over the current Oliver/Susan relationship.

The Vampire Diaries says goodbye

The series finale of The Vampire Diaries was bittersweet. I wish everyone had a happy ending, but they didn’t.

Vicki followed through on Katherine’s order to ring the bell. She released the hellfire that was supposed to destroy Mystic Falls. I say supposed to because it didn’t. Bonnie, as she did so many times during the series, saved the day.

She came up with a plan that would allow her to send the hellfire back to Hell and destroy it. To make sure Katherine was gone once and for all, someone had to ensure Katherine was in Hell at the time Bonnie destroyed it. Damon volunteered to do it and thought he compelled Stefan to leave him in the tunnel with Katherine. But Stefan had vervaine in him and couldn’t be compelled. Instead, Stefan gave Damon a shot of his blood, making Damon human. Stefan then stood in the tunnel and killed Katherine as the hellfire passed through.

I couldn’t believe Stefan died. I thought a miracle would happen and he would survive, but that didn’t happen. Like in many episodes over the years, I watched as everyone said goodbye to Stefan for one last time. I felt bad for Caroline. She ended up becoming a widow after being married for only one day.

In the end, Caroline opened up a new school for gifted children with Alaric and Jeremy came back to help them run it. It was named after Stefan.

Matt was still a cop in Mystic Falls and got a bench with his name on it.

Bonnie figured out how to break the spell on Elena. Once the spell was broken, Bonnie decided she was going to do what Enzo wanted and live life to the fullest. She planned to travel the world.

Elena and Damon were the only ones to get a true happy ending. Elena became a doctor and lived a long human life with Damon until they both died. In death, Elena was reunited with her family and Damon saw Stefan again.

Overall, I thought it was a good ending. It was touching to see the love between Stefan and Damon, and I loved that Bonnie finally got her powers back and saved the town.

Vino el Amor: Romance is everywhere

Vino el Amor has made me so happy. After months of waiting, David finally came to his senses and told Luciana that he wants to be with her. I’m glad the writers didn’t rush them. It made the last couple of episodes more satisfying.

Of course, now that they are together, the door is open for more exciting things. Luciana has a huge target on her back. Graciela will most likely attempt to kill her. After all, she killed her sister, Lisa, because she wanted David for herself. As far as Graciela is concerned, no one will stand in her way when it comes to David.

While that storyline is heating up, I’m also glad to see more focus on Sonia and León. I still haven’t figured the two of them out, but I laugh every time I see them together. I wonder if Sonia will stop acting like she’s in a romance novel. León seems to like it, which amazes me because he pined for Carito for so long and, while she’s crazy, it’s in a different way than Sonia. I love this storyline though because it gives Vino el Amor some comic relief.

The other couple I like is Erika and Miguel. Miguel appears to be finally moving on, even if it is at a snail’s pace. Unlike Luciana, Erika really likes him. He continues to remind me of José Luis from Lo Que La Vida Me Robó. José Luis was with someone else for awhile, but he never got over Montserrat. I hope I’m wrong about Miguel.

The show drought is ending

It’s mid-January and my show drought is about to end. Tonight, Timeless is back. When we left off, Flynn had kidnapped Lucy. Obviously, Wyatt and Rufus will go after her and get her back. I’m interested to see what happened to Rittenhouse after David Rittenhouse was killed. Rittenhouse’s son, who got away, sounded a lot like his dad, which makes me wonder if anything really changed.

I’m also looking forward to the return of the CW shows. In the next couple of weeks, The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow will be back. I’m most looking forward to Supergirl because of the blossoming relationship between Kara and Mon-El.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until March for the return of Designated Survivor. I can’t believe I have to wait another two months to find out who took the bullet.
